Why it Matters in North Carolina

This issue is close to home. North Carolina ranks among the states most impacted by gun violence, with both homicide and suicide contributing to the crisis.

North Carolina's firearm death rate increased 30% from 2015–2024—twice the national increase. During that time, gun suicides rose 23% and gun homicides increased 42%, both outpacing national trends.

Firearms are the leading cause of death among children and teens in North Carolina. An average of 191 young people die from gun-related injuries each year—64% from homicides and 28% from suicides.

Young Black men are disproportionately affected by gun violence. In North Carolina, young Black males ages 15–34 represent approximately 3% of the state's population but account for 36% of gun homicide deaths.
